How to manage fatigue on the road this holiday season

David Berthon

Planning a long trip for Xmas – we give little thought to fatigue yet its one of the three major killers on our roads. So how can we manage it – what are some of the early warning signs – on a long drive your thoughts may wander, you may miss a road sign or exit, brake a little late or slow unintentionally. One in four of us now work more than 49 hours a week – as such fatigue is more prevalent so it’s no coincidence the highest number of fatal crashes occur in the afternoon peak on a Friday. Fatigue crashes are also twice as likely to be fatal – as the impact is far greater. If you heading off with the family please leave early morning after a hearty breakfast, make sure you carry water and are hydrated regularly and please without fail take a 15 minute break every two hours. I know it all sounds rather simple but a few simple rules could well save your family. I’m David Berthon
