Jim Haynes, writer & Australian historian, about how Aussies got through the Spanish Flu which saw 15,000 die in Australia with Sydney reporting in 1919 that 42 per cent of all deaths were from the flu.

 

Major public events were cancelled, public places were to be avoided, and the wearing of masks in public was made mandatory as schools, cinemas and dance halls all closed.

 

But in the wake of the Spanish Flu crisis, a much better hospital system was created, home entertainment boomed, sales of pianos and gramophones flourished and pet ownership increased.
