Holden may be down but far from out

David Berthon

Holden’s slide down the sales ladder continues, sales last month dropping 38 per cent below September last year. Of course there are plenty of pundits who want to write off the GM Australian importer as it struggles to lift its sales in a down market.  11,329 sales to the end of September show it has lost half its sales since it stopped making cars in Australia two years ago. Understandably, the former No.1 manufacturer’s dealers are deeply concerned, Holden describing the sales result as disappointing and “Clearly not where we want to be”.  Dealers are understood to have had a significant sell down of demonstrator stock last month, perhaps the result of previous company incentives for them to carry too many demonstrators. But is it the company’s marketing that’s letting down their sales down – I’m not alone in suggesting their current advertising theme of “You got this” is perhaps the worst in the company history – what the hell does it all mean!
