Heading the soccer ball & potential concussion

Phil O'Neil

Following a call from a concerned listener, Luke speaks with Dr Adrian Cohen, Concussion researcher at Headsafe, who joins medical experts concerned about the long-term health effects of footballers heading the ball.

“Think about each header as transferring energy to your brain; you have a total lifetime dose of energy that equates with how many times you head the ball,” says Mr Cohen.

“Heading the ball hurts. Kids don’t like doing it. Why are we putting them through it?”  Mr Cohen says it was critical to mitigate the risk heading poses in young kids, whose brains are not yet fully developed.
