FULL SHOW: Weekends with Peter Fegan – Sunday, 2nd June 2024

Peter Fegan

On the show: Feegs is back to round up your weekend. First up, the report that Queensland teachers are wanting to trial Body Cams as incidents of physical aggression spike in classrooms. Peter chats to QLD Teachers Union President Cresta Richardson who provides her thoughts on the matter, including the impact of lack of funding and resourcing in schools to cater to the increasing needs of students and supporting principles when they make disciplinary decisions.

Award-winning journalist Samantha Maiden joins Feegs for the Sunday Breakdown. Samantha comments on the survival of Immigration Minister Andrew Giles in his current position, Peter Dutton’s comments on the issue in light of recent revelations regarding his own performance in the role previously and the prospect of an early election.
Northside family-run bakery Brewbakers (FKA Eagle Junction Bakery) is being forced to close after 30 years of serving their community. Peter chats to co-owner Richard Cotton about the reasons for the closure and his fears of further domination from the big supermarket chains.

Dementia Australia’s Director of Client Services Barb Williams joins Peter to have a wider conversation about the condition in the wake of the Brisbane Memory Walk and Jog event that raised much needed funds for dementia research. Barb talks about some of the signs of dementia and the impacts it can have on patients and their families.

Woodford Folk Festival is one of Australia’s most beloved and iconic cultural events and it’s been around for almost 40 years. Festival Director Amanda Jackes gives us all of the info on what we can expect from this year’s festival and how they manage to survive amongst a recent spate of cancellations in the festival space.
Finally, national living treasure and Indigenous rights advocate Father Frank Brennan has released a book analysing the Voice to Parliament titled ‘Lessons from Our Failure to Build a Constitutional Bridge in the 2023 Referendum’. Father Frank shares his thoughts on if reconciliation in Australia has gone backwards, where the push for Constitutional recognition of Indigenous people is at and his thoughts on corporate Australia’s involvement in the referendum’s failure.
