Foreign drivers with international licences to face tougher regulations

Why does it take so long in the country to plug gaping holes in driving licence
regulations. We’ve just learnt that foreign visa holders from China, India, Pakistan
and Nepal are now required to sit a NSW driver licence test within six months of
arrival to legally drive on our roads. Until now a loophole allowed these drivers to
drive locally on their foreign licences despite the fact they may have clocked up
13 demerit points or been convicted of major driving offences. Drivers coming
from Japan, Singapore and Germany will still have to convert to a local licence
but won’t have to take the driving test due to their country’s stiffer test regime.
The NRMA has welcomed the move, Spokesperson Peter Khoury suggesting
most people will judge the changes as commonsense and that consistency and
the same rules for everyone are essential – here, here. I’m David Berthon
