First half sales figures for 2018 show SUVs are the big winner

Official V-Facts first half new vehicle sales showed a 1 per cent lift on the first half of last year with some interesting results with SUV’s continuing their dominant share of the market – accounting for 43.1 per cent of sales in June compared to 31.9 percent for sedans and 21.8 percent for light commercials. Utes filled the first three top-selling positions last month – headed by the Toyota Hilux, Ford’s Ranger and Mitsubishi’s Triton.
The Toyota Corolla filled fourth place with Hyundai’s i30 in fifth. Not surprisingly, small SUV’s were the fastest growing market segment in the first six months – Best seller in small SUV’s under $40,000 was Mitsubishi’s value-packed ASX followed by Mazda’s CX-3, Subaru’s XV, Nissan’s Qashqui, Honda HR-V, Hyundai’s Kona and Toyota’s CH-R. Above $40,000 the best-selling small SUV was the Mercedes-Benz GLA followed by the BMW X1, Audi’s Q3 and Q2, the Mini Countryman, BMW’S X2 followed by Jaguar’s new E-Pace and Volvo’s XC40.
