Europe to ban sales of petrol and diesel cars from 2035

david berthon

Its official – European Parliament this week has introduced new laws that will
ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars and light commercials in the 27 states that
make up the European Union from 2035. Car makers must also cut CO2
emissions of new vehicles by 55 per cent, compared to 2021 levels, by 2030. This
target had been previously set at 37 percent. While the new law effectively bans
the sale of petrol and diesel cars it does not specifically mention banning internal
combustion engines and leaves open the door for synthetic fuels and hydrogen
power. Porsche began synthetic e-fuel production last year and the Tasmanian
produced synthetic fuel could power a number of other Volkswagen Group
vehicles from 2026 while Toyota and some other car makers are developing
Hydrogen-fuelled combustion engines.
