Encrypted letters from Mary, Queen of Scots

Ian Connellan, editor and chief of the Royal Institute of Australia, joins John to talk about the latest science stories.

This week, John discovers old encrypted letters from Mary, Queen of Scots, and what they actually say. They detail her tumultuous life, with a 19-year imprisonment in England by her cousin Queen Elizabeth I, followed by a charge of treason and her execution on 8 February 1587.

John then looks at artificial intelligence being used by Google. The AI technology, BARD, made an error when it determined the James Webb Space Telescope took the first images of a planet outside our solar system… when in fact, the first image of a planet outside our solar system was taken 18 years before Webb began taking pictures.

To finish up, John dives into the ethical dilemma of autonomous cars. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich have developed the first ‘ethical algorithm’ to try and answer the question: who should the autonomous vehicle kill?
