Crime File: Some good comes out of all evil

On Saturday 13 June 1998, the decapitated and mutilated body of 59-year-old David John O’Hearn, was found at his Albion Park home, south of Sydney. The word ‘Satan’ was written in blood on a mirror and a wall, along with a star shaped geometrical figure with five points which resembled a magical or occult symbol.

Police said it was the most macabre crime scene they had ever witnessed and was ‘gruesome in the extreme’. A post-mortem revealed that horrific ritualistic injuries had been inflicted on David O’Hearn after his death.

Two weeks later, the body of the former Lord Mayor of Wollongong, 68-year-old Francis Neville Arkell, was found at his Wollongong home. There was little doubt that whoever killed David O’Hearn had also killed Mr Arkell.
