Could Australia ban TikTok?

Mike Jeffreys

Mike talks to Professor Matthew Warren, Director of the Centre for Cyber Security Research & Innovation at RMIT University, about the potential ban of TikTok in the US and whether Australia is likely to follow suit.

The US House of Representatives passed legislation urging TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform due to security concerns linked to China.

This move aligns with a global trend, with TikTok already banned on government devices in multiple countries including Australia, the UK, France, Canada, the EU, Taiwan, and Iran. India has taken more drastic measures, banning TikTok and other Chinese apps for all citizens.

The concern stems from TikTok’s alleged data harvesting practices, including access to camera, microphone, contact lists, other app data, and location information.
