Candidates vie for the seat in the Dunkley by-election

Mike Jeffreys

Ahead of Saturday’s Dunkley by-election, Mike is joined by Dr Zareh Ghazarian, Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations, School of Social Sciences at Monash University, to discuss the political candidates vying for the seat.

The Dunkley by-election holds significant importance in Australian politics, shaping the national debate.

For Labor, retaining Dunkley is vital for maintaining a House of Representatives buffer and gauging public sentiment toward the government. It also serves as a test for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s leadership.

Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton’s strategy hinges on winning outer metropolitan support, and success in Dunkley would boost his standing within the party.

Conversely, a poor performance may lead to leadership concerns within the opposition as the general election approaches.
