BMW’s 2nd Gen 4-series Coupe delivers the looks and performance.

David Berthon

Driving two examples today of BMW’s second generation 4-series coupe, the two most affordable models, the entry 420i at $70,900 and the 430i at $88,900. Both 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo, the 420i with 135kW of power, the 430i with 190kW – drive to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic with manual paddle shifters. In short, the latest BMW 4-series two-door coupe has a far more individual appearance and character to its predecessor, now far more removed also from the 3-series sedan and very distinguished with its deep bold vertical grille. The 420i model despite gaining a lot more equipment to the first series remains the same price $70,900 while the 430i gets a $6,400 price lift to $88,900.

Standard features on both extensive, the 420i gaining electric sports seats in leatherette, a head-up display, wireless phone charging and parking assistance that includes a reversing camera and sensors, semi-automated parking, even reverse autonomous emergency braking. And there’s an extensive suite of driver assist technology. Despite the price lift the 430i in my opinion is the one to own, adding adaptive M suspension, M Sport brakes, full leather trim, and much more.  BMW does sport motoring very well and the refinement together with sharp styling, great seats and nice interior elements really set this second generation 4-series duo apart. The styling, especially the deep grille, giving them real character.
