Australia’s first overseas telephone service on this day in 1930

Mike Jeffreys

Andrew Willet, telephone collector & historian, joins Michael to share his knowledge regarding Australia’s first overseas telephone service which came into operation on this day in 1930… and what it was like before the service was introduced.

The very first call linked Australia’s then Prime Minister James Scullin with the British Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald for a conversation that lasted fifteen minutes.

The service was the result of experiments carried on for many months between the engineers of the British and Australian post offices and of the Amalgamated Wireless Company of Australia.
