Anaesthetists or anesthesiologists? The medical profession pursuing a name change
Anaesthetists do more than sedate people before surgery.
They monitor patients throughout operations, play a key role in resuscitation and help manage patients with chronic pain.
But 1 in 10 people don’t realise this and incorrectly assume that anaesthetists aren’t doctors. In fact, they’re often mistaken for nurses.
To rectify this, the industry is calling for a name change. They want to shift the term anaesthetists to anesthesiologists, saying this will resolve issues around the identity of the profession.
To discuss, Warren Moore was joined by Professor David A Scott, from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.
