19,000 Australians call to end ‘Big Australia’

Mike Jeffreys

Mike speaks with Peter Strachan, National President of Sustainable Population Australia (SPA), about the need for population policies to help Australia stabilise below 30 million people. Strachan says this is achievable by setting net overseas migration (NOM) targets between 60,000 and 80,000 annually.

SPA also urges the government to meet global commitments by allocating 0.7% of Gross National Income to foreign aid, with a focus on family planning and reproductive health.

Strachan highlights the environmental impact of population growth, noting that every State of the Environment report links high population density to environmental decline—more so than climate change. He says voters are frustrated with being ignored by vested interests and feel silenced when raising population concerns, which are often mischaracterised as anti-migration.

He concludes that the strong support for SPA’s Position Statement shows Australians want a sensible, voter-backed approach that is currently missing from political debate.
