The Minister for Women says there’s not “much to be gained” by responding to Grace Tame’s criticism of the Prime Minister. 

Presiding officers of both chambers, Scott Morrison and Anthony Albanese formally acknowledged all past incidents of bullying, sexual harassment and abuse in federal parliament.

The recognition was the first recommendation of a review into workplace culture in the building.

During his address, Mr Morrison apologised to former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins and told parliament he’s committed to creating change.

Marise Payne told Sofie Formica it’s important the presiding officers made their statements today.

“These responses are very important and the Prime Minister’s words … have been, I think, very heartfelt and very important for him to place on the Chamber record,” she said.

But former Australian of the Year Grace Tame didn’t offer as much support for the scenes at parliament, boiling the move down to a ‘performative’ act.

How about some proactive, preventative measures and not just these performative, last-minute bandaid electioneering stunts?

But Ms Payne wouldn’t be drawn into a discussion on the comments, instead telling Sofie: “Ms Tame’s comments are, of course, a matter for her”.

“She has given service over the last year as Australian of the Year to amplify the voices of sexual assault survivors.

“She’s educated, frankly, many Australians on how we can better prevent and respond to sexual abuse.

“I don’t think there is much to be gained by me commenting on her individual comments.”
