PM in Washington: Former diplomat warns Turnbull shouldn’t be triumphal

Despite their relationship having a rocky start, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is in Washington alongside President Donald Trump who is rolling out the red carpet.

But former diplomat Dave Sharma warns Prime Minister Turnbull should not be triumphant.

He tells Chris Kenny it’s a particularly significant visit in light of the refugee deal President Trump will honour.

Though the deal benefits Australia, it doesn’t particularly favour the United States, and it became the trigger point for a heated discussion when the two leaders first spoke.

“The Prime Minister won’t want to be triumphal about this but is it a significant achievement.

“The fact that the United States is honouring this is a significant diplomatic achievement for the Prime Minister and for Australia.”
