‘Pity it didn’t happen over the last couple of years’: Laurie Daley previews Origin I

For the first time in years, Blues legend Laurie Daley will be watching State of Origin as a passionate fan, rather than a nervous coach.

After being relieved of his position after last year’s series loss, Daley has watched on in interest as new coach Brad Fittler builds a new squad.

His successor has started from scratch, handing debuts to 11 players for tonight series opener at the MCG.

Daley tells Ben Fordham he thinks the Blues “will get away with” the victory.

“If they play to their potential tonight, they win, there’s no doubt about it. There’s serious firepower in this NSW team.”

He also admits it would have been great to have a shot at a Queensland side without the ‘Big 4’.

“It would have been a nice time to try and get Queensland but you’ve got to move forward Benny, you’ve got to look ahead, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.

“It’s massive for Queensland, this is their biggest challenge in a while.

“We knew it was always coming, pity it didn’t happen over the last couple of years.

“You take superstars and future immortals out of any side and you’ll struggle.”
