A number of Ukrainian cities are under attack after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a military operation on the state.

A Ukrainian woman living in Australia told Sofie Formica the news is devastating.

She had only returned to Australia last week after caring for her elderly mother.

While the embattled country has had tense relations with Russia for some time, Nataliya Murad said reports that Ukrainians are apathetic are untrue.

“We sort of got used to that war because it takes time and people have to survive,” she told Sofie Formica.

“But we always wanted our independence and we thought it was so unjust and so unfair and so bloody.”

Ms Murad said it’s hoped Ukraine will receive greater international aid than sanctions.

“Now we just feel helpless, we feel there is no help to come from anywhere and we can’t stand Russia’s might.

“I understand Ukraine’s forces will fight until the bitter end and civilians are now also asking to join the army.”
