There’s been an amazing act of heroism on the Gold Coast.

A man’s helped avoid a major crash on the M1 when the driver of a car he was a passenger suffered a heart attack while driving.

The woman, aged in her 50s, was driving northbound on the M1 at Oxenford shortly before 7.30pm when she went into cardiac arrest.

Her quick-thinking male passenger, who was also a work colleague, jumped into action and managed to successfully steer the car across three lanes of traffic and onto the side of the motorway.

He then called Triple Zero and with the assistance of the operator, performed CPR on the woman until ambulance crews arrived.

Paramedics used a defibrillator to resuscitate the woman before she was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.
