Parents hearing ‘crickets’ amid fears Gabba rebuild will absorb school

A Brisbane community say they’ve heard nothing but crickets on the fate of a heritage-listed school ahead of the knockdown-rebuild of the Gabba.
East Brisbane State School has stood beside the Gabba for 123 years and boasts a student cohort of just over 300 but time could be running out for the grounds.
The state government has provided no assurance to staff and parents the school will remain untouched by the stadium’s rebuild from 2026 and beyond.
Paul Gollan, a father of kids at the school, told Spencer Howson a lack of definitive answers from the government has parents fearing the worst.
“What I fear’s going to happen is unfortunately, I think the school’s going to be closed down and potentially East Brisbane, Woolloongabba and Kangaroo Point … are going to be without a local school,” he said.
“It has been floated the possibility the school could be amalgamate with other schools.”
But with nearby schools already at capacity, Mr Gollan said this was an entirely unwanted possibility.
“You’ve got Coorparoo bursting at the seams with 800 students, you’ve got Buranda, I don’t know what space is there to amalgamate, you’ve got Dutton Park.
“But really, when you’ve got a school that many people walk to, skate to, ride to, we’d need another school in the heart of where it currently is.”
