Pararoos have World Cup in their sights
Australia’s only national football team for athletes with cerebral palsy and acquired brain injuries are getting ready for their own World Cup in 2019.
The Socceroos open their campaign in Russia next week, but their lesser-known countrymen, the Pararoos, are in the early stages of their own preparations.
Coach Kai Lammert joins Alan jones and says the 24 man side is unbelievably inspirational.
“Every player story is very, very unique and their own form of hardship. It’s a battle for them… but to represent their country is huge at the end of that.”
To qualify for next year’s tournament the Pararoos need to finish in the top two at the Asian Cup in November, but funding is proving an issue.
The Australian Sports Commission withdrew all government funds from the squad in 2015, so the side is struggling to make ends meet with money raised by the FFA and Australian Sports Foundation.
Alan has asked Kai to let him know how 2GB listeners can help… stay tuned.
