Police are fuming after an officer was “blindsided” by a punch to the head while transporting a man to the watch-house.

The incident began around 4am Monday when a 24-year-old man allegedly crashed his vehicle into a four-wheel-drive stopped at a set of lights on the Gold Coast Highway at Broadbeach.

He was detained by police before allegedly punching an officer in the head while on the way to Southport watch-house, where he blew a blood-alcohol reading more than four-times the legal limit.

Gold Coast police superintendent Rhys Wildman told Mark Levy seeing such behaviour is “extremely concerning”.

“Having one of our staff essentially blindsided by a punch to the head in a vehicle while it’s being transported is just taking things to a whole new level for us.

“The male … returned a reading of 0.211 at breath analysis, … which is hard to comprehend for anyone on a Monday morning.”
