Former Manly player and NRL great Owen Cunningham says it was a blur when he and his family were caught up in a horrific brawl at Suncorp Stadium for Magic Round on Friday night.

Footage circulated on social media as the fight broke out.

Cunningham recounted what happened on 4BC’s Wide World of Sports.

“I’ve never been one for conflict … it was a bit of a shock to all of us,” he told Peter Psaltis and Paul Vautin.

He says his son, who was sitting in front, was “whacked in the back of the head” and ended up in hospital, needed stitches and breaking a sinus bone.

“It was hard to just stand there and watch it unfold in front of you when your flesh and blood is taking a hammering, and there was a lot of them.”

He said some of the group came from surrounding seats, and said it “wild” and he felt the group was looking for trouble, while many fans watched on.

“It’s not the Australian way, mate.”

The group were “quick to disperse” when security came.

They are yet to press charges, he said.

He hopes the perpetrators are never allowed back into a major event again.
