‘No way’ Qld’s DNA testing lab managers can resume roles, scientist says

Bill McDonald

The forensic scientist who helped trigger an inquiry into Queensland’s DNA testing lab is calling for its managers to be sacked.

A damning report has found public servants lied about what was going on, contributing to a plethora of testing failures.

It means thousands of criminal cases in Queensland are in need of review after lab managers prioritised speed over accuracy.

Dr Kirsty Wright told Bill McDonald on 4BC Summer Mornings even she had “no idea” about the extent of the issues plaguing the lab.

“I think anyone reading that report would be absolutely horrified,” she said. “It is absolutely unbelievable.

“We’re talking about deception, misleading police, misleading courts, letting down victims of crimes and their families.

“We heard evidence of sabotage, management-led sabotage of crime scene evidence to help conceal their wrongdoing.”

Dr Wright said the laboratory managers’ positions are untenable.

“There were scientists within that laboratory for many years, going to these managers, raising extremely serious concerns.

“Not only were they ignored, they were either bullied, abused, and some were even hounded out of their jobs.

“There’s no way that these managers can resume that role and be presented to courts as honest people.”
