There have been heartwarming reunions scenes reminiscent of Hollywood movies at Queensland’s airports, as the borders have finally reopened.

There were tears and cheers and hugs at the Gold Coast and Brisbane Airports, but also in Coolangatta as a steady stream of people drove across the state line.

But for some, returning home is bittersweet.

Meredith Llewelyn, who lives in Pottsville in NSW, has personally witnessed the devastation of many stuck interstate and offered a helping hand to raise funds to help pay for temporary accommodation and other essential items.

She said while it is a happy day for many, it was still a long road ahead for many who were locked out of Queensland for months.

“It’s not a ‘everybody’s got home and they all live happily ever after’ it’s not the ending,” she told Scott Emerson.

Ms Llewelyn said some were returning home to very little.

“They’ve lost jobs, employers haven’t held jobs for 2, 3, 4 months for them,” she said.

“It’s not over for them, by any manner of means.

“They are relieved they are home, the are relieved they have seen family, but they don’t know where to start Scott.”

She said they have helped close to around 100 families.

“I’ve had many nights Scott, where I have just gone to bed and just cried.”
