New biosecurity taskforce set up to assess Australia’s risk of foot-and-mouth disease
The federal government has called in the ADF and set up a new biosecurity taskforce to assess Australia’s preparedness for an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.
The agriculture industry fears an outbreak would decimate the sector and cause billions of dollars damage.
Nine News political reporter Eliza Edwards explained more about the taskforce on Brisbane Live.
“[Foot-and-mouth disease] is currently running rampant in Indonesia, Australia is still free of the disease and the government wants to keep it that way,” she explained.
“They have this new taskforce, the ADF will be involved in it, basically it’s looking at whether Australia is prepared enough, and identifying any holes in our response that could mean Australia is caught short if it does arrive on our shores.”
