Neil Breen slams trio of officials who ‘defied’ Australia’s boycott of Beijing Olympics
Neil Breen has called out a trio of government officials who defied Australia’s diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics.
Two staffers from the Brisbane City Council and a key bureaucrat from the Queensland Premier’s office were in Beijing for 10 days.
The group was part of the International Olympic Committee’s official observer program, where future host city executives are exposed to a range of issues about hosting the Games.
“I thought for them to go on that trip and to not tell anyone they were going was very, very ordinary,” Neil said.
“If we’re going to go over there as delegates, defying the Prime Minister of Australia’s own boycott of the Games, … we’ve got to be upfront about it, we’ve got to be told what learnings we got.
“What did we get out of these trips by going over there and appeasing the Chinese?”
