Name of disgraced former mayor set to be removed from Ipswich assets

The name of a disgraced former Ipswich mayor will now be scrubbed from council assets following the backflip of a number of councillors.
Five of nine Ipswich councillors voted to overturn a decision to remove Paul Pisasale’s name earlier this month in a move led by his former deputy, Paul Tully.
But after copping an immense amount of backlash, three councillors today walked back their votes to overturn the decision.
Councillors Paul Tully and Sheila Ireland abstained from the vote today but it had little impact on the outcome, which saw the remaining seven vote in favour of removing Pisasale’s name.
Pisasale was sentenced to 7.5 years behind bars in 2020 for more than 30 serious crimes, including official corruption, extortion and sexual assault.
The renaming of the infrastructure is expected to take some time as council CEO and native landowners work to find alternative names for the impacted Pisasale bridge and street.
Mayor Teresa Harding said it was a win for common sense.
“Really delighted to see common sense has prevailed, the last 12 days re community has come out in droves, it’s been really wonderful to see,” she told Neil Breen on Brisbane Live.
