It’s often thought the flashing headlights to alert other drivers of speed cameras could land you a fine.

But the common practice may not be as risky to your hip pocket as many think.

Acting Inspector Donna Stewart told Peter Fegan, filling in for Scott Emerson, the move doesn’t actually break any road rules.

But there could be some unintended consequences drivers should think twice about.

“With respect to warning about upcoming enforcement, I guess it’s a matter of what’s the motivation and what’s the potential consequences.

“If you flash your lights at a driver to warn them there’s a booze bust ahead and they’re under the influence, what happens if they then take some back streets and continue to drive under the influence.

“In a lot of times, you might just be feeling altruistic but there could be potential consequences.”

Acting Inspector Stewart warned fines can still be handed out for misusing headlights in other circumstances.

“There is actually an offence and it’s to use your high beams within 200 metres of another vehicle.”
