More RBTs on the way as police reveal alarming drink-driving numbers

4bc news

Drink-drivers are being caught at one of the highest rates in history even after police halved the number of random breath tests carried out across Queensland.

Officers conducted 1.4 million RBTs in the last financial year, where 13,500 people were caught drink-driving or failed to provide a sample.

“What that tells me is there’s more people out there who’ve got a problem separating their drinking from their driving,” Transport Minister Mark Bailey told Laurel, Gary & Mark.

“About a quarter of our [road] fatalities are from people drink-driving. That’s 60 or 70 people a year.”

The Gold Coast, Logan and Moreton areas were named as some of the worst areas for drink-driving in the last financial year.

The new figures come as police warn the state’s motorists they’ll be ramping up random breath testing this year after a decrease during the pandemic.
