‘Monumental problem’: The idea to help displaced Queenslanders

Scott Emerson

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland is pushing for an “incentive” to encourage property owners to rent out their holiday homes, short-term rentals to displaced Queenslanders.

CEO Antonia Mercorella says it’s a “monumental problem” in an already tight rental market, with many Queenslanders finding themselves without a home due to the flood crisis.

She said it couldn’t have come at a worse time with vacancy rates at an all time low.

“We know that there there are a number of properties that are available here in Queensland, but they are presently sitting on the short-term or letting market, they are on sites like Air Bnb, Stayz, etc,” she told Scott Emerson.

“We also know there are quite a few people who own a second property in Queensland, it might be a holiday home, so we think it’s a great opportunity, these are generally fully furnished properties … which is perfect when we think about the number of tenants ho have lost possessions.”

She said there should be an educational and promotional campaign.
