Developer Mirvac has responded to fierce criticism over its handling of the apparent closure of the well-loved Toombul Shopping Centre.

Federal MP Anika Wells this morning hit out at Mirvac after a meeting between executives and another local state MP, Leanne Linard, was canned at the last minute due to staff illness.

It was hoped they would facilitate the resolution of some issues, including allowing business owners access to recover items from their stores.

In a statement to 4BC Drive this afternoon, a spokesperson for Mirvac said they have asked to reschedule the meeting.

“The decision to close the centre was made after careful consideration given the extent of the damage, the risk of future flooding, and to provide certainty for our retail partners,” the statement read.

“This heartbreaking decision to close Toombul was not taken lightly.

“The entire Mirvac team are devastated for our retail partners – many of whom are small business owners – their staff and families as well as for the local community who visited the centre over many decades.

“While there has been much speculation on the future plans for the site, no decision has been made.

“We are now assessing the future of the site, which will include retail services for the local community.”
