Mirvac must ‘jump through a lot of hoops’ to get Toombul redevelopment green-lit

It will take a lot for a controversial redevelopment of the Toombul Shopping Centre site to be approved by Council, the Lord Mayor says.

Property developer Mirvac has ousted numerous business owners in the complex following the February floods, with intentions to bring forward redevelopment plans.

But Adrian Schrinner says it won’t be a simple process for Mirvac to move forward.

“They’re going to have to jump through a lot of hoops because of the flood-affected nature of the site,” he said.

“They must be able to demonstrate it’s flood-resilient and also, most importantly, won’t worsen flooding for other people in the area.”

He agreed the jilted business owners have copped the short end of the stick and deserve more support.

“Good on you for drilling down into this issue,” he told Breenie.

“What I want to see is those tenants that were flood-affected, and now have been basically told there’s no more business there, they need to be treated fairly.

“There’s state legislation that can help protect these tenants, so we’ll be talking about that as well to make sure they get fair treatment.”
