Mark Levy sees red over Queensland’s ambulance delay deaths

Mark Levy

Mark Levy is seeing red over the Health Minister’s reaction to reports that more than a dozen people died in a period of 16 months while waiting for ambulances.

A 16-month snapshot from the Queensland Ambulance Service shows at least 15 deaths logged between January 2021 and April 2022 occurred after a “delayed response” from paramedics.

Health experts say pressure on stretched hospitals is to blame, as overflowing emergency rooms keep paramedics from dropping their patients off.

But Yvette D’Ath yesterday insisted it’s not fair to frame the issue as a crisis, as 20 deaths out of more than a million paramedic call-outs was a relatively small number.

“Ms D’Ath, I’ll tell you what’s not fair: Queenslanders waiting hours for an ambulance,” Mark said.

“It’s not fair a family has lost a loved one because they were failed by a health system that’s been dying its own slow death for years.

“What’s really not fair is deflecting even one death by saying, quote, ‘What about the other million-odd people who were saved?'”
