Lord Mayor: Why Brisbane needs a second cycling centre for the Olympics

Gary Hardgrave

Neil Breen has probed the Lord Mayor for answers on why Brisbane will have a second cycling track at Murarrie.

The Brisbane City Council yesterday released its 2022-23 budget, which included the $16.1 million build of a cycling centre ahead of the Olympic Games.

Neil Breen: “We’ve already got the Anna Meares centre at Chandler. We spent $60 million doing that up for the Commonwealth Games.

“What are we building a cycling track at Murarrie for?”

Adrian Schrinner: “Anna Meares is a velodrome and this is about road cycling.

“This is effectively a road cycling track, … not in a sloping velodrome, this is a flat road surface for road cycling.

“It also includes a 500-metre speed cycling track as well.”
