Lord Mayor urged to ‘come to the party’ on Coopers Plains overpass

A third overpass overpass of a Brisbane rail crossing is one step closer to construction as governments reach an agreement on the design.

The final design for the four-lane Acacia Ridge overpass was released on Wednesday with a view to replace the problematic Boundary Road rail crossing.

Queensland’s Transport Minister Mark Bailey told Spencer Howson on 4BC Summer Breakfast the solution is long overdue for the area.

“Anyone around that southside, around Sunnybank, Coopers Plains, Acacia Ridge, Salisbury, would know all about the Coopers Plains double crossing,” he said.

“It is a real bugbear, it’s one of the worst level crossings, I think, in south-east Queensland.”

But for the design to get any further, someone needs to stump up an additional $93 million.

“We’ve got the federal government and state government [each] putting in a third; Council’s only put in only about a ninth, about $40 million,” Mr Bailey continued.

“They’ve paid 50 per cent for other level crossings on the northside, we’re only asking them for a third here.

“I’d love for the Lord Mayor to come to the party and invest something on the southside because everyone on the southside knows it’s a real problem.”
