‘Loosest’ and ‘slackest’ e-rideable laws in the world says road safety body

Scott Emerson

The Chairman of one of Australia’s peak road safety groups has slammed the laws behind e-rideables saying that Brisbane doesn’t have the infrastructure for the sheer amount of riders on the footpath.

Harold Scruby from the Pedestrian Council of Australia has told Scott Emerson on 4BC Drive that the footpath has become dangerous with the increased use of e-scooters and e-bikes.

“There’s more e-scooters and many more crashes. We’ve got to stop calling them accidents because they’re not accidents. Most of these are caused by people breaking the law. Over half of them are caused by people who are not wearing helmets,” he said.

“There (were) 797 people admitted to hospitals in Queensland in the 18 months to May 2020.”

Mr Scruby says the footpath has become too dangerous for pedestrians and that it’s not suitable for e-rideables stating: “Why don’t we build the infrastructure that’s required.”
