Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has hit back at claims he broke the rules by intervening to stop the deportation of a French tourist.

The woman was granted a three-month tourist visa in 2015, despite concerns she intended to work.

It was then revealed she was working as an au pair for the cousin of AFL boss Gil McLachlan.

Speaking with Ray Hadley, Mr Dutton denies he broke any rules in stopping her deportation, saying each case is decided on its “merit” and the proper processes were followed.

“I made a judgement based on the merit of the case, not my knowledge of the person who had referred it.

“I looked at it and I thought it’s a bit rough, there’s no criminal history.”

The Home Affairs Minister then hit out at those who are using the claims to build a case against him.

“I’ve got lots of enemies in the media running around at the moment trying to get square for recent events and the rest of it. They can run all of this nonsense.

“Let them play their games. For me, there are lots of important issues to concentrate on.

“I am a person of integrity. I’ve never been compromised. I never will.

“People can say lots of things about me but they won’t say that I act inappropriately. I make decisions on the merits of these cases… and I stand by the decision.”

Mr Dutton also says Scott Morrison can take the Liberals through to win the next election.

“Not going to be easy, there’s no question about that.

“I’m more determined than ever to make sure that we do well and that we achieve success at the next election. I believe that we can because there’s a big contrast now between Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten.”
