Labor secures Greens support on climate legislation
The Greens will vote with Labor to pass the government’s climate bill after securing changes to the legislation.
The Albanese government plans to slash carbon emissions by 43 per cent by 2030.
Greens Leader Adam Bandt told the National Press Club while his party will back the legislation, more needs to be done to stop new coal and gas projects.
Without support from the Coalition, the government needed support from the Greens to pass the bill through the Senate.
“The Greens have improved a weak climate bill but the fight to stop Labor opening new coal and gas mines continues,” Mr Bandt said.
“In this parliament, the only obstacle to greater climate ambition is Labor.”
Anthony Albanese maintains the Greens are not steering the ship on climate policy, despite changes made to earn their support.
“It’s a Labor bill, it is not a Greens bill,” he told the media at a press conference this afternoon. “I am the leader of the Labor Party.”
“We have an agenda that we will implement, consistent with the principles that I have always held.
“I’m not surprised at some of the rhetorical position but I will leave that to others.”
