Karen Andrews warns against ‘complacency’ as Solomon Islands signs China deal
The federal government is expressing its disappointment over a security pact signed by the Solomon Islands and China.
The deal has raised concerns that Beijing will build a naval base in the South Pacific and increase its military presence in the region.
Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews told Neil Breen the terms of the agreement aren’t known.
“We have been very strong in expressing what our concerns are,” she said. “We’ve made it clear what our views are.
“No one should be looking at anything that’s happening in the Pacific region with any level of complacency, particularly where China is concerned.”
