The Home Affairs Minister admits it “was not entirely as we wished” that an unvaccinated tennis player and coach were able to pass through Border Force undetected.

There are questions around how the pair slipped through Border Force and whether they would have been detected had Novak Djokovic’s saga not drawn attention.

“I understand the concerns about that,” Karen Andrews told Neil Breen.

“I, myself, have been asking some questions in relation to the multi-layered approach we already have in place.”

But Ms Andrews insisted while they were able to enter the community, Border Force still did its job.

“Once we picked up information that indicated they were potentially here unlawfully, Border Force contacted them and the result was that those two people left voluntarily.

“Whilst the process was not entirely as we wished – clearly we would like all those people to be stopped before they get into the community – they were picked up by Border Force through their intelligence networks as well and they took action accordingly.

“We have certainly done all we can to make sure people are either vaccinated or they can prove [why] they’re not vaccinated to get into the country.”
