Sofie Formica has given an insight into misogyny in Australia’s entertainment industry off the back of a story shared by former news presenter Jessica Rowe.

Talking on her podcast the Jess Rowe Big Talk Show, Rowe explained about the time when she was was co-host on Ten News in Sydney in the late 1990s.

Rowe said she was told by her boss she wasn’t able to read the main news story of the bulletin six years after she started in the role, because she’s a woman.

“I knew what the answer would be, but I was still gobsmacked when my boss told me the answer, with not a hint of sarcasm in his voice,” she said on her podcast.

4BC producer and co-owner of TV Black Box, Rob McKnight, told Sofie he knew that story from his time at Studio 10 with Rowe.

Sofie shared her own experience as the first woman in Australia to host a game show, up against the perception that audiences only wanted to see men as game hosts.

“With Jess it was, you can’t do the lead story with me it was they don’t want to see you asking the questions, they are happy forĀ  you to assist … anything that came after that it was never the lead position.”
