Ipswich fights for clean air as landfill stench becomes ‘unbearable’

Thousands of Ipswich residents are at their wits’ end over the stench from a local landfill site. 

Odours from the New Chum Landfill site in eastern Ipswich are under investigation after thousands of complaints.

Residents have formed a social media group to try and force action after putting up with the issue since 2011.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding told Sofie Formica the problem boils down to poor management and a lack of oversight.

“There are eight privately-owned landfills in Ipswich that are not owned by Council and they take in 42 per cent of the waste in Queensland,” she said.

“It’s concentrated in this area and it’s really important that the waste companies uphold their legal obligation but also, that the state makes sure they do all their compliance and enforcement activities.

“To date, they haven’t been.”
