Ipswich cars fall prey to fuel thieves amid petrol price hike

Gary Hardgrave

Ipswich residents are waking to find their cars drained of fuel as petrol prices sit at more than $2 per litre.

Police warn in the midst of financially tough times, opportunistic crimes are likely to increase.

Ipswich District Crime Prevention Coordinator Nadine Webster told Neil Breen car owners should take some measures to prevent thefts.

“We’re encouraging our community to … lock their vehicles, because the modern vehicle cars have a locked fuel cap … when the vehicle is locked,” she said.

“If you don’t have a garage, because not everybody has one, please park your vehicle in your yard, or even in your backyard to make access to your vehicle that much harder.

“And if that is not an option as well, then parking your vehicle in well-lit areas, where your vehicle can be seen if there are persons acting suspiciously around it.”
