Indian nationals detained at Brisbane Airport ahead of Commonwealth Games

Macquarie National News

A group of Indian nationals claiming to be journalists covering the Commonwealth Games have been detained at Brisbane Airport.

It’s understood Australian Border Force officers have detained the group of nine as their claims were not considered genuine.

Queensland Deputy Police Commissioner Bob Gee says the investigation is ongoing but there is no threat to the Games.

“In fact, what we’re seeing is that the system works,” he said.

46-year-old Rakesh Kumar Sharma fronted Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with an aggravated offence of people smuggling, which carries a minimum five-year sentence if convicted.

AFP confirmed he was one of the nine detained.

The Commonwealth Games start on the Gold Coast on April 4.
