Former skipper Ian Chappell says selectors should be concerned about the next generation of players and who could replace David Warner when he retires.

He says there is no one close to Warner as an opening batsman.

“As a selector, the easy part is to drop somebody, but you’ve got to find someone who you think is going to be better,” he told Peter Fegan, filling in on 4BC Mornings.

“You show me an opening batsman who is better than David Warner, there is no one near him.

“You show me someone who had the physical courage to go out and attack the new ball, but also the mental courage.”

He said with Warner and Usman Khawaja nearing the end of their careers, it should be a concern for Cricket Australia.

“You start looking at who are the replacements and that’s a concern for Australia because if you look at the young Shield players, they are just not there.”

Chappell also weighed in on the recent controversy surrounding Sir Donald Bradman.

“If Bradman gave any advice on batting, they would all listen with both ears because Bradman was obviously from his records the greatest batsman of all time,” Chappell said.

“But I had to deal with him unfortunately and the dealings weren’t very good.”
