‘I want out’ – Has the diversity mantra gone far enough?
Michael McLaren has warned listeners to be careful regarding what he calls simplistic political slogans, which he says oversimplify increasingly complicated issues.
He points to the oft-repeated slogan ‘Diversity is our strength’, saying there are signs Australia still has much to do in order to smooth tensions.
“The rise of One Nation is all the evidence you need that many Australians feel the diversity mantra has gone far enough,” he said.
“They were alarmed that people thought it ok to celebrate the slaughter of innocent people on October 7 by co-opting one of our great national symbols – the Opera House – and cheering it all on. If this is what diversity looks like, so many said, then I want out,” he added.
