Police say contracted cleaners discovered the remains behind a housing commission complex on Alderley Avenue in Alderley just before 11am today.

The remains had been tightly wrapped and partially buried in a void behind a besser block wall behind the building, covered in clothing and bedding.

A crime scene has been declared as scientific officers examine the area.

“It is apparent from our initial analysis of the scene that the body has been there for some months,” Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham said at a press conference.

“There was no noticeable smell or other indications that were suspicious to people.”

Mr Massingham said residents who have so far spoken to police were unable to provide any leads in the investigation.

“It may take some time to identify who this person is, the cause of death,” he said. “We currently have dozens of missing persons reports that we are going through.

“There’s been no one at the unit block here today that knows of anyone who’s resided here who’s gone missing all of a sudden, or any people associated with anyone here today, but there are some five or six residents not home at this time.”
